A superhero, by definition, is a fictional character who posses superhuman abilities or skills, mutant powers, or extraordinary talents and that is dedicated to protecting the people. Some superheroes do not have powers like Batman or Green Arrow but do posses extraordinary skills. The first superhero was invented by Jerry Seigel in 1933 and was named Superman.
Superheroes shot to popularity in the 1940s with the creations of Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonderwoman, and Captain America. The 1940s were known as the Golden Age of Superheroes because of the popularity and the early movies about them. The 1960s were known as the Silver Age of comics because they were still popular but not as popular as the 40s. Superheroes created in the Silver Age were Martian Manhunter, Spiderman, The Hulk, Thor, Ironman and groups like the Justice League, X-men, and Avengers.
Superheroes are still incredibly popular with the American public. Movies based on superheroes like Batman, Ironman, and Spiderman have done incredibly well in the box office. The Avengers is the most successful movie of all time it tops box office sales and the number one grossing movie of all time. The Superhero will always be an icon in American society.
